World Cities Day: Teaching Students about Urban Development through Video

Discovery Learning Alliance (DLA) is helping children understand how cities work and grow through a new video on urbanization. By 2040, more than half of Africa's population will live in a city, so this is an important lesson for children to learn early. DLA's video, set in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, combines captivating scenes of the city with an inside look at urban development from the perspective of experts who plan city structure. The result is a compelling lesson in urban migration, economic development, community building and city planning.

The urbanization video is part of a library of video content created by DLA in collaboration with educators in the developing world. Working closely with ministries of education, our teacher training helps educators use videos to teach a wide variety of subjects – from language to mathematics to life skills. Videos like Urbanization make subjects like science and mathematics more relevant for students. Urbanization will be a welcome addition to our library as we bring the world into the classroom for students and help teachers bring learning to life.
