“Learning has become interesting”: Inspiring Learning and Motivation Through Dynamic Learning Resources

Jessica,* a Class Four student at a primary school near Nairobi, used to find school boring. Some topics were too abstract for her to understand and she was often absent from school, or left early to go home. Once her teacher began using video lessons in class as part of The Discovery Project, Jessica’s perception of school changed.

“When we started learning using TV, I was very happy. Learning has become interesting and every day when I wake, I want to be in school to learn more. I do not want to miss TV lessons.”

The Discovery Project is funded by the UK government through DFID’s Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC), which has partnered with Impact(Ed) International since 2013.

With significant brain activity involved in vision, it only makes sense that Discovery Learning Alliance’s video library is so effective in increasing understanding, retention, motivation and learning.

Jessica’s academic performance has improved, as she is now more motivated and interested in her studies and dedicated to her schooling. In the three terms since The Discovery Project was introduced, Jessica’s overall scores have increased and she rose in class ranking from 18th to 11th out of 63 students. Her teachers began supporting her to be more involved and ask questions in class.

Jessica is now committed in her school work and attendance and hopes to be among the top five pupils at the end of the school term, with her biggest inspiration coming from a lesson on careers.

“When teachers take us to watch the videos, it helps me see things clearly. I want to learn more about science because I want to be a doctor in the future.”
